Drugs investigation targets Castlerea

A major Garda investigation into drugs in the Castlerea district has resulted in the seizure of over €44,000 worth of drugs, mainly cannabis and cocaine, since April of this year. Yesterday (Wednesday) morning, Gardaí from Castlerea, the Crime Task Force in Roscommon and the Drugs Unit in Galway searched a house and car in Loughglynn village in a planned operation at 8.30 am and recovered approximately €1,200 worth of cocaine. One man was arrested and was taken to Millstreet Garda Station in Galway for questioning. Gardaí have confirmed that yesterday’s operation was part of an on-going investigation into the use of illegal drugs in the Castlerea area. On April 20th, Gardaí recovered €1,000 worth of cannabis at Castle Park, Castlerea. On June 20th, a car was stopped in Ballymoe and €23,000 worth of cannabis and cocaine was recovered. On July 15th, at Kiltobranks, Ballaghaderreen, €14,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis was recovered by Gardaí at Mantua Festival and on July 20th, Gardaí seized cannabis plants valued at €5,000 at Lower Longford, Castlerea. Numerous seizures have also been made in relation to people having drugs for personal use. A Garda spokesperson this week told Roscommon People that there is increased drug use in the area. ‘Anti social behaviour has changed and it has to be attributed to abuse of alcohol and abuse of drugs.’ The Gardaí also appealed for help from members of the public in the fight against illegal drugs in the region. ‘If members of the public are aware of where illicit drugs are or any information, we would ask them to contact the Gardaí here in confidence.’
