The community of Lecarrow in South Roscommon is in shock this morning following the tragic death of a local man and his sister while on holiday in Ballybunnion, County Kerry yesterday evening.
The siblings, who have not yet been named, got into difficulty in the water on Thursday evening and it is understood that the alarm was raised shortly after 6pm by a teenager who was related to them.
A massive rescue operation was then launched by coastguard and air ambulance.
A short time later the body of the 50-year-old man was brought ashore and Members of Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue and Ballybunion Coast Guard began CPR but he was pronounced dead a short time later. The 62-year-old woman was then recovered from the water and was also pronounced dead at the scene.
The local man, who was married with two sons, had been living in Lecarrow for many years while his sister, who lives in Malmo in Sweden, was home on holidays.
Post-mortem examinations are to be carried out on the bodies later this morning.
