Dr. Gerry O’Mara, Consultant Geriatrician, officially launched The Carers Support Group for Families living with Dementia. The event took place on Tuesday, July 26th in The Melting Pot in Roscommon town.
This support group is a joint initiative by Family Carers Ireland, The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland, Western Alzheimer’s and the HSE.
The prevalence of the number of people living with the condition has increased from 47,849 in 2011 to 55,000 in 2016.
Dementia is a condition that can place high demands on family carers and the support group is a vital place for carers to support each other. Dr. O’Mara was delighted to support this initiative and wished every success to all involved.
Support Group meetings will take place on the last Tuesday of every month. For further information please contact Family Carers Ireland at 090 6627698.
Meanwhile, Marian Harkin MEP donated €2,500 to Family Carers Ireland Roscommon. This is part of Marian’s Oireachtas pension which she has not claimed since she went to Europe. This year Marian donated her full pension to different offices of Family Carers Ireland.
Marian has been and is a strong ambassador for family carers and has always been a champion of their cause. She is part of an interest group in Europe for Carers. This group was established by Kathy Sinnott and is being continued by Marian.
Each year Marian gives family carers an opportunity to visit Brussels for a weekend. This is a great break for carers and a unforgettable experience as they have the privilege of being able to attend the European Parliament and also sit with an interest group and offer their views. This October Marian is giving four carers an opportunity to travel to Brussels. This will take place from the October 17th to 19th. If you are a family carer and would like to be considered for this trip please phone Family Carers Ireland Office at 090 6627698.
