Dowd wonder try can’t save gallant Creggs

Creggs seniors – Connacht Junior 1B League: Creggs 17 Castlebar RFC 19.

Creggs seniors completed their league campaign at The Green on Sunday. Castlebar started impressively and scored a fine try after 10 minutes. They added a second try midway through the first half to go 14-0 ahead.

Creggs replied with a well-worked try by Michael Farrell after crisp handling by the backline created an overlap for Farrell to touch down in the right corner. At the break, it was 14-5 to Castlebar.

Castlebar scored a third try in the 45th minute when the Creggs defence was stretched to breaking point, thus going 19-5 ahead.

Creggs hit back immediately with a try by impressive number 8 Kevin Brandon and the game was really in the balance when Shane Dowd scored a sensational solo try following an 80-metre run, leaving several defenders in his wake. Dowd’s conversion left just two points between the teams but Castlebar held out for a hard-earned win.
