Doherty family tribute

The Doherty family from Cootehall, including Cllr. Rachel Doherty, this week paid tribute to the late Hugh Gibbons. ‘I wish to express my sympathy and that of the Doherty family to the Gibbons family on the death of the late Dr. Hugh Gibbons. Dr. Hugh Gibbons was a wonderful doctor and he was held in the highest regard in the parish of Kilronan and surrounding areas. He was synonymous with Fianna Fáil as a TD in the constituency for many years.    ‘After my late father Seán took over from him in 1977 he remained a close friend and confidant of my father and my family. Dr. Hugh continued to be involved in community affairs, the GAA. He never lost in interest in politics and indeed he was a noted local historian. It’s true to say of Dr. Hugh that he was as proud of Keadue as Keadue was of him. ‘It has been a tragic week for the parish of Kilronan – the untimely passing of Barbara Doyle a talented and popular young woman has devastated the community and the death of Dr Hugh has brought a sad week to a close. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.’
