Development Association looks to future with confidence

Maureen Hanly is secretary of Strokestown Community Development Association and ideally placed to reflect on progress in one of County Roscommon’s most historic and beautiful towns.    Maureen reflected on some of the positive developments which have been ongoing or are ‘in the pipeline.’   She reported that a social housing project (located near Centra) has received planning permission and will be going to tender in the near future. The project involves six units and a resource centre.   ‘Local traders are responsible for the Christmas lights project in Strokestown and these will be switched on later this week.’    Maureen adds that the Association, which is chaired by Eugene Murphy, remains actively supportive of other projects in town including the exciting sports campus – which will provide top-class new facilities for people – Strokestown Show, Feile Frank McGann and the well-established Strokestown International Poetry Festival.    ‘These are all very important events which enhance community life in Strokestown and boost the local economy. They have our full support. There is a lot happening in Strokestown. We have work going on at the roundabout at the moment, while a slipway is being developed from the grotto (below Anthony Beirne’s) down to the river. There are plans. There is of course great commercial development in evidence and we very much support and welcome this’.
