Derry capitalise on bright start

Allianz National Hurling League Division 2B (Round 4): Derry 3-16 Roscommon 0-12

Roscommon took to the field facing into a strong breeze and it was Derry who got a dream start with an opportunist goal from Aaron Kelly. This left the Rossies trailing by 1-2 to no score after just three minutes.

Following this tough start, the Rossies didn’t settle until the last ten minutes of the half, with scores from Robbie Fallon (2) Cathal Kenny (2), and Naos Connaughton. Derry led 1-10 to 0-7 at the break.

Roscommon started the second half as they finished the first and narrowed the Derry lead with scores from Robbie Fallon (2), Johnny Coyne, Adam Finnerty and Eamon Flanagan.

Things were looking good after fifteen minutes of the second half but Derry upped their game and completely outplayed Roscommon for the rest of the match.

The home side finished deserving winners with two well-taken goals from full-forward Oisin McCloskey and man of the match Darragh Cartin.

This was not the result that Roscommon were looking for as they travel to Ashbourne tonight (Thursday 16th) to play Meath at 8 pm in the game that was postponed a couple of weeks ago.
