Debut for string section of youth orchestra

The string section of Roscommon County Youth Orchestra, based in Roscommon, held their first concert on 24th May in Roscommon VEC to show parents and friends the great progress they have made since they joined last November. Under the excellent tuition of Natalia Gorovenco, members of the string section performed four new pieces with great aplomb. There were also a number of solos by members. In Castlerea, Nathan Power, tutor of RCYO brass section has been busy working with boys from St Paul’s NS to give them a taste of being part of an ensemble. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth classes have spent the last four weeks learning the basics of playing the trumpet, trombone and tuba. Many of the students hope to join the brass ensemble in September and eventually become members of the full youth orchestra. In Boyle, tutor Steve Hanks and the woodwind section are preparing for their end of term concert. RCYO is a great opportunity for young people to get involved in music. As the fees are very heavily subsidised by Roscommon Arts Office and Roscommon VEC, and instruments are provided on loan free of charge, the only thing that is needed from members is commitment and willingness to practice! Additionally, all of the sections are helped to run smoothly by the participation of parents who supervise classes on a rota basis. This gives them the opportunity to see their child’s progress and also to learn something about playing an instrument so that they can support their child’s progress. This summer, members from the three areas, Boyle, Castlerea and Roscommon, will come together for a special programme called Fusion. This will be the first time that the three sections have come together to play. Vincent Hunt, director of the Midlands Youth Orchestra will be coming in as guest conductor and the programme will take place in the Cuisle Centre in Donamon on 9th and 10th August.
