Death of legend Hugh

Fianna Fail Government TD Michael Finneran has led tributes to former Fianna Fail TD, the legendary Dr. Hugh Gibbons, who died yesterday (Wednesday). Dr. Gibbons was a star member of the All-Ireland winning Roscommon team of the 1940s and a Fianna Fail from 1965 to 1973.    A native of Ballybeg, Strokestown, Hugh Gibbons was born in 1916. He enjoyed a brilliant career in medicine, football and later in politics. He was predeceased by his wife Josie and is survived by his four sons and two daughters.   Deputy Finneran said: ‘I learnt of his death with great regret. He was a man with a mild demeanour who was very courteous. He was a brilliant member of the Roscommon team and a very good politician, a gentleman of politics indeed.’    Deputy Finneran said that, on behalf of the Fianna Fail party in Roscommon, he wished to extend deepest sympathy to the Gibbons family members on the death of their father. ‘The people of Roscommon are indebted to Hugh Gibbons,’ he added.
