Cyber attack wreaks havoc on local hospitals

The Saolta University Health Care Group has said the recent ransomware cyber attack on the HSE’s IT systems continues to have a considerable impact on local hospital services.

As of yesterday (Wednesday), all outpatient clinics remain cancelled at Roscommon University Hospital as well as diagnostic and endoscopy services. A small number of inpatient and day case procedures may go ahead and patients will be contacted directly.

Patients can also expect significant delays at the Roscommon Injury Unit as the existing IT systems are not in use.

Maternity services are going ahead at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and patients have been advised to attend chemotherapy appointments unless contacted.

A statement on the Saolta website reads: “We ask patients to contact their GP or GP Out Of Hours Service in the first instance if their health problem is not urgent.

“Where possible patients should bring their existing patient number or hospital number with them when they come to the hospital or any letter that they have received from the hospital as this will contain information which will make it easier to find existing medical records. Patients should also bring a list of any medications they are taking.

“We would like to thank our patients for their understanding at this difficult time”.
