At this week’s monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council Independent Councillor Tom Crosby proposed a motion that would increase the minimum fines under the litter act to €1,000 from its present level of €130. Cllr. Crosby said that unless the minimum fines were reviewed sharply upwards there would be no real deterrent to those who sought to spread litter. Cllr. Crosby told the meeting that there was a problem in every town and village including his own village of Tarmonbarry and he claimed that he had removed three black bags of rubbish from the river bank in recent weeks which were dumped there illegally. ‘This carry-on cannot continue. We have to get serious about illegal dumping’ said Cllr. Crosby.
