Creggs crash out of Curley Cup

Creggs 8 NUIG 16

Having met twice already this season with each side claiming a home victory this away win decided the rubber in favour of the students and booked their place in the Curley Cup Final.

With dreadful conditions underfoot, Creggs began with the advantage of a strong wind and Shane Dowd landed a long-range penalty after 3 minutes.

Creggs however failed to capitalise on the elements and an uncharacteristic combination of poor decision-making, weak tackling and handling errors allowed NUIG dominate the remainder of the opening half to first equalise through a John Kennedy penalty after 16 minutes and take the lead 6 minutes from the interval when flanker Euan McCormack crossed for an unconverted try.

Things looked ominous on the turnaround for Creggs and within 10 minutes NUIG added a second try when second row Josh Dunne crossed over, the conversion attempt rebounding off the post. Creggs regrouped and the next 15 minutes saw their best rugby of the day, totally dominating the scrum and loose forward play with due reward coming in the form of a try for scrum-half Andrew Callaghan following a forward surge after 23 minutes. This brought Creggs to within a score of the visitors but NUIG got their insurance points 6 minutes later when Kennedy added a second penalty and Creggs never really threatened to bridge the gap in the final period.

This weekend sees the resumption of league action with Creggs at home to Loughrea, the first of three vital home league games. Kick-off at The Green 2.30 pm on Sunday.
