Creggs ‘buzzing’ amid Pride of Place preparations

Creggs village is currently a hive of activity preparing for the visit of Pride of Place judges on Wednesday next, August 16th, as the village represents County Galway in the Biodiversity and Climate Action section of the All-Ireland awards.

Creggs was last nominated for the Pride of Place awards in 2019, in the community category on that occasion. This time the focus is on biodiversity and climate action and the community is preparing to showcase the many actions underway in the village in relation to biodiversity and climate action.

Meetings have been held every Wednesday night at 9 pm in the Heritage Centre. All households in the parish are asked to get behind the effort and see what part they can play in this year’s efforts.

A village clean-up was held on Saturday morning, with young and old represented. Another clean-up is planned from 11 am to 1 pm this Saturday morning. Last Saturday’s event was a great opportunity for people to see the community in action, and there was a great ‘buzz’ around the village – if you will excuse the biodiverse pun!

Creggs is currently working on a Biodiversity Action Plan, following the receipt of funding from the Community Foundation, which allowed Creggs Rural Development to engage the services of ecologist Sheila Murphy. The local development group liaised with village residents and those living further afield and also liaised with the local GAA and rugby clubs before collating the ideas in a plan, which will be published during Heritage Week.

Judges will visit Creggs on Wednesday afternoon, August 16th, having visited a project in Gort in south Galway in the morning. They will be shown a short presentation in the Heritage Centre by members of Creggs Rural Development before getting out and about to see at first-hand the work being done in the village in terms of biodiversity and climate action. They will then enjoy refreshments in the school hall before leaving the village at approximately 5 pm. Locals are asked to gather in the school hall at 4 pm on Wednesday (16th) to meet the judges. All are welcome to attend.
