Creggs’ big opening day a huge success

Last Saturday was one the greatest days in the history of Creggs Rugby Club as the club celebrated the opening of its fantastic new playing pitches and facilities in the village.

Around 350 boys (from Creggs, Carrick-on-Shannon RFC, and Claremorris RFC) and 50 girls (from Creggs, Dunmore RFC and Claremorris RFC) took part in a Mini Rugby Blitz on the four playing pitches (including the full-sized World Rugby approved 4G artificial all-weather pitch).

Later, several Creggs youth teams played Connacht League and friendly games, including a great performance from the Creggs U-16 team who defeated league leaders Ballinasloe by 36-19.

The Development team and a large number of former players (Creggs Legends) then entertained the crowd on the 4G pitch as part of what was a great reunion.

This was followed by the official opening of pitches, terrace, stand, electronic scoreboard, and amenity walkway.

In typical fashion for a proud community club like Creggs, eleven club members, representing the various parts of the club, cut the tape in unison on the 4G pitch in front of the new stand.

The day on the fields was then crowned by a bonus point win for Creggs Firsts over Buccaneers by 38-21.

An historic day was rounded off as 250 people attended a great night at the Creggs RFC 45th Anniversary Dinner Dance in the Abbey Hotel on Saturday night.
