COVID-19: Ming calls for ‘Total Lockdown’

MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan is leading calls for a total lockdown of the country as part of the ongoing response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Writing in the Roscommon People, Mr. Flanagan says: “I believe that we must move to instigate a total  lockdown now, similar to France”.

In a stark declaration, ‘Ming’ said that if action is not taken now, “we will needlessly kill thousands of our citizens”.

He writes: “Why wait? Why be behind the curve? We can see what works. Lockdown is currently the only ‘medicine’ against this virus. It worked in China. It is just beginning to work in Italy. Most countries in Europe are going towards lockdown”.

He appealed to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Health Minister Simon Harris to go beyond the further series of restrictions announced on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, hundreds more businesses in County Roscommon have temporarily closed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of workers have been laid off.

Roscommon’s towns and villages are eerily quiet. It is evident that people in Roscommon are engaging very responsibly in social distancing. While there is absolutely no room for complacency, it is encouraging that it is still the case that there are less than five confirmed cases in County Roscommon.
