Businesses and homeowners in Roscommon and surrounding counties are braced for high winds and torrential rainfall after Met Éireann issued three weather warnings ahead of the expected arrival of Hurricane Lorenzo later today (Thursday).
A status orange wind warning is currently in place for neighbouring Galway and Mayo as well as Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick while yellow wind warnings are in place for the rest of the country from 9 am today (Thursday) until 6 am on Friday. It’s expected that Hurricane Lorenzo will be downgraded to a powerful storm by the time it reaches the west coast of Ireland but the National Emergency Coordination Group met yesterday morning to discuss the measures that will need to be taken ahead of the storm’s arrival.
Gardaí have warned motorists that driving conditions will be hazardous while the ESB have said that power outages are expected from Thursday evening into Friday morning. The Defence Forces are on standby to offer assistance in affected areas.
