County final at a glance

Man of the Match Mervyn Connaughton (Athleague) There were a number of candidates. John Mulvey had an outstanding game for Pearses at centre half-back and Shane Sweeney and Alan and David Loughnane also played well for John Donoghue’s men.    For Athleague, Colm Moran and Niall Connolly did well in defence while Gary Fallon played well in spurts but the overall contribution of Mervyn Connaughton was immense. He was everywhere and without him Athleague would not have survived last Sunday. Another superb display from Roscommon hurling’s captain fantastic. The weather Dull and overcast but perfect for hurling and the pitch was in superb condition as usual. The crowd Very disappointing attendance but there was a good atmosphere towards the finish when it became clear that it would be a very tight affair. Entertainment Value This was a poor final in terms of quality hurling. Defences were on top and there were very few good scores from play. It has been a long year in the Roscommon SHC and maybe the players are getting tired. Hopes will be high for a better game in the replay though. Referee Watch   Brendan McDermott did a good job overall but there were two controversial frees late on. However most people would agree that a draw was probably a fair result.
