Roscommon County Council has approved an overdraft facility of up to €8m for 2027 to cover temporary gaps in its cash flow.
At Monday’s monthly meeting, members were told the facility would allow the council to meet costs on larger capital projects, particularly housing developments, before the related funding is recouped.
An official explained that the council could, for example, have to pay for a development of 20 homes before receiving reimbursement. The facility would be available for that interim period and was not intended to fund day-to-day expenditure.
The council had an overdraft facility between 2008 and 2020 but had not needed one since, the meeting heard. Members approved the new facility as a precaution for larger housing projects, with funds to be drawn down only if a temporary shortfall arises.
