Roscommon swimmers are being asked to nominate lakes, rivers and other popular swimming locations for possible designation as official bathing waters.
Roscommon County Council has opened its annual consultation on the identification of bathing waters for the 2027 season, with submissions remaining open until 5 pm this Saturday, September 26.
The Council says there are currently no designated bathing waters in County Roscommon.
Official designation allows bathing areas to be monitored for water quality and safety, while designated locations can also become a focus for local authority facilities including lifeguard services.
The Council is asking swimmers to consider how frequently their preferred location is used, the number of swimmers and other visitors, existing facilities, accessibility and any safety issues.
The EPA has suggested minimum usage levels for areas being considered for formal designation, including at least 10–15 bathers per day at peak periods for smaller or more remote locations and 20–30 for larger or more accessible areas.
