Conncannon on target

David Concannon was winner of the Youths section as the final Round of 7 of Ireland’s Players Championship was played out at the weekend in Dublin. The eldest of the Concannons ended his day with 3x 180 scores and a checkout of 104 which won him the event in a 3-2 win over Kilkenny’s Paddy Meaney.    The last 16 of the youths section will see 4 Roscommon players involved in the finals in August. The top 8 will include David Concannon and Mark Finneran who will fight it out for top honours in the Cup section. Thomas and Gary Concannon are in the bottom section of 8 for which the Youth Plate will be on offer.    The massive effort and long distances being travelled on an almost weekly basis by the young and talented Ballinaheglish group of four must be noted. The result at the weekend is another confidence booster as Roscommon Players take to the International stage yet again when the 6th annual Youth Friendship Trophy takes place this weekend coming from May 23rd to the 25th in Derby, England.    David and Gary Concannon are one of three sets of brothers on this year’s 15-a side National Team. Mark Finneran from Ballymacglancy in the heart of Roscommon will also be representing the county. And for the 6th year in a row Ballaghaderreen’s Sean Fleming will don the Green Shirt. All four will have been involved in National events before but this is the first time that Gary Concannon and Mark Finneran will make appearances in an International event.     One noticeable and disappointing omission from the panel is Thomas Concannon who has been a very tough and skillful competitor at Youths and Senior level over the past year. Northern Ireland, England and Scotland stand in the way of a first Irish Friendship Trophy Success. All four players and their travelling support are wished every success!!
