Connacht Cup exit for Ballinasloe

Roscommon & District   League round-up  Roscommon and District League Premier Division side Ballinasloe Town failed to reach the Connacht Cup semi- final for the third time in four seasons when beaten 2-0 at home by Athenry. The Galway Premier Division side reached the FAI Junior Cup Final last season and were the better side in this game. Paddy Quinn headed their first in the first half and Seamus Rabbitte added a second from the penalty spot in the second half.   In the G and H sponsored Roscommon & District League Challenge Cup Round 3 Moore Utd. beat fellow Premier Division side Kilkerrin Utd. 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the game finished at 2-2 at the end of extra-time. John Greene scored early for Moore Utd. with a twenty-metre volley and newcomer Derek Kwiatkow added a second ten minutes into the second half. Keith Mahon pulled a goal back for Kilkerrin Utd. and Aiden Kitt converted a penalty near the end of normal time. There were no goals in extra-time and Moore won the resultant penalty shoot-out. They are away to Castlerea Celtic in the next round.   Division 2 champions Ericsson F.C beat Premier Division side Ahascragh Utd. 4-0 at Athlone and now play Ballymoe F.C. in the next round. Andy Doyle opened the scoring and their leading goalscorer Des Boyle added two more before John Quilty completed the scoring.   Heatmerchants continue their winning run and they beat fellow Premier Division side Moylough 2-1 at Moylough. The home side took an early lead but Serge equalised before the break. David Donoghue scored the winner for Heatmerchants in the second half and they play away to Dysart in the quarter-finals.   In a local derby game at Dysart the home side beat Cam Celtic 4-3 after extra-time. On three occasions Cam Celtic came from behind but when John Coyne volleyed to the Cam Celtic net with three minutes to go in extra time they could not find another equaliser. Andy Higgins, Jason Corbett and Nial Corbett had earlier scored for Dysart with Donald O’Connor replying for Cam Celtic.   Division 1 side Laurencetown Utd. are into the quarter-finals and a meeting with Premier Division side Ballinasloe Town. They were involved in a seven-goal thriller away to Ballinagare before coming out 4-3 winners. Liam Davis scored two and Derek Dervan and Mike Hughes one each for Laurencetown. Mark Drury, Joseph Byron and John Moran replied for Ballinagare.   Division 1 leaders Ballymoe are also through to the quarter-finals following a 3-1 win over Glen Celtic ‘B’ at Glenamaddy. John Keavney scored with a stunning free kick to give the home side an early lead. Tom Shaughnessy headed an equaliser with a minute to go in the first half and Joe Healy added two more for Ballymoe in the second half. Cloonfad Utd. beat favourites Castlerea Celtic 1-0 in the preliminary round of the Premier Division Cup Competition. The Cloonfad goalkeeper Tony Noone kept the Castlerea Celtic forwards at bay throughout the game and in the last minute Declan Costello scored the winner for Cloonfad Utd.   In the Abbey Hotel Division two game played on Friday evening Ericsson F.C beat Shiven Rvs. 3-1 at Newbridge. Michael Fitzgerald opened the scoring, John O’Sullivan added a spectacular second and Des Boyle completed the scoring for Ericsson F.C.    Lough Harps received all three points from their game against Moore Utd. In the Casey Ford Division 3 Loughglynn Utd. beat Cloonfad Utd. 3-0 at Loughglynn. Mark O’Brien scored two and Joe O’Flanagan added a third with Paddy Collins pulling a goal back for the losers. Lisnamult Celtic received a walkover against Ballymoe F.C.
