Concannon takes title in classic encounter

The curtain came down on the Hollywood Bar Superleague last weekend as the Finals night was held on the ninth night of the competition. The top eight players in the group played off for the cup section of the competition while the following four players competed for the Shield section. Following on from a 5-4 win for Eoin Byrne in the Shield Final (full details in next week’s paper) a thrilling Cup Final was played out between Gary Concannon and Paul Carton.

Concannon had stormed through the final with wins over Ciaran Hickey (4-0) and Wayne Harries (5-3) in the quarter-finals and semi-finals while Carton had been impressive against Mick Kilroe (4-2) and Mick Egan (5-3).

Concannon’s class came to the fore in the final and he overcame Carton 6-3 in what turned out to be a top class match.

This past weekend saw the annual INDO National Singles being held in the West County Hotel in Ennis. Saturday’s event saw Ballinaheglish player Thomas Concannon make it all the way to the semi-final before losing out to eventual winner Dave O’Connor of Dublin. On Sunday, Mick Egan and Gary Concannon both made it to the last 16 before losing out to Damien O’Driscoll (Cork) and Jacko Barry (Dublin) respectively.

Finally for this week, the Roscommon Darts AGM will take place tomorrow (Friday 23rd) at 9 pm in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon town. There will be a number of issues up for discussion including election of committee members and the format of the league. All teams must have at least one representative present on the night, but all players are encouraged to attend in order to voice their opinions.
