Community Games round-up As we near the end of the soccer tournament the semi finals were played over this past weekend, leaving us the remaining teams to ‘fight’ it out in the finals. The teams played in the best of weather and very competitive games. In the Boys U12 Semi-finals Ballaghaderreen beat Boyle and Kiltoom beat Drum leaving a Ballaghaderreen versus Kiltoom final to be played on Saturday 17th May at Lisnamult, Roscommon, starting at 2 pm. In the Girls U12 Semi-finals Drum beat Ballaghaderreen. The Moore versus Douglas Hyde semi-final is being played on 13th May at Lisnamult, Roscommon at 7pm, which will bring about a Drum versus Moore or Douglas Hyde final. This final will be played on Saturday 17th May at Lisnamult, Roscommon, after the boys U12 game, starting at 3.15pm. In the Girls U15 Semi-finals Drum beat Ballaghaderreen and Strokestown beat Douglas Hyde. The final between Drum and Strokestown will also be played on Saturday 17th May at Lisnamult, Roscommon starting at 4.30 pm. All competitors must bring along their birth certificates as proof of age as they have to be presented and checked before the finals begin. The Soccer Tournament Committee members would like to thank all the referees for giving up their valuable time to come along and take charge of the games, because without their continued help this tournament could not be played. The committee would also like to thank all the venues in Ballinagare, Lisnamult, Kiltoom, Taughmaconnell and Strokestown who allowed the games to be played on their pitches. We all look forward to the finals on the 17th and hope they are well supported. All Ireland Finals, Mosney 23/24/25th May: Any parent or guardian who has a child attending the games at Mosney, who was unable to attend the meeting last Monday, can contact their area secretary for any information that they might require. Areas Parish Sports Day: The Roscommon Committee would ask all areas to hold their Parish Sports Day as soon as possible. Once the ‘winners’ forms are completed they must be sent to Eileen Brennan, Newtown, Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis, Co. Roscommon for inclusion into this year’s programme. The county finals are being held on 21st and 22nd June which doesn’t leave a lot of time to get the programme completed and printed. Your help in getting this information to Eileen is much-needed. Castlerea St. Kevin’s Under-14 team secured a place in the B county finalwith a hard-earned victory over Oran in Rockfield on Saturday. St. Kevin’s had the better of the first half and went in leading by 5 points at the interval. On resumption, Oran went on the attack straight away and cut the deficit to 3 points. They maintained the pressure throughout but St. Kevin’s held firm and secured the last point of the game to win by 4 points. Oran Community games – Change of date Oran Community Games athletics finals will be held in the grounds of Donamon Castle on Sunday June 1st at 4 pm and not on Sunday next, June 18th as previously advertised. Community Games have been organised in the parish since the 1970s. In the 1980s and 1990s the community games were held at the GAA field in Rockfield but the committee reverted back to Donamon Castle in recent years. Events on Sunday, June 1st will include races at under 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16. Races will be held over 60, 80, 100, 200, 400, 600 and 800 metres. We hope to see a big support from the parish on the day. Everyone is welcome. Kilgefin Community Games The local track and field events took place on Sunday 11th May at St. Faithleachs pitch in glorious weather. We had a terrific turnout of children and their families. Many thanks to all the children who took part and to all who helped in one way or another to make the games a truly community fun event. Thanks also to St. Faithleachs GAA club for the use of their lovely new grounds, Ballyboro scouts for tents and equipment and to Ted Falvey who supported our healthy eating promotion with fresh fruit for all competitors. The winners of each track event will go through to the county track finals which take place in St. Faithleachs on 21st and 22nd June. The winners of the field events (ball throw, long jump and long kick) go through to the county field events which take place on Friday 27th June at 7.30pm in Taughmacconnell.
