Connaught Finals The Connaught finals took place on Saturday 5th April, hosted by Leitrim Community Games, in different venues around the County of Leitrim. 17 teams from the county of Roscommon travelled with parents, managers, coaches and supporters to compete in a variety of indoor events. Congratulations to the 7 winning teams who will go forward to Mosney in the All-Ireland Finals and to all the other competitors who competed on the day. Badminton Mixed U15: The Ballaghaderreen badminton team were drawn against Mayo in the first semi-final. After a good match Mayo came out winners and went on to meet Leitrim in the final and took the gold medals. Chess U12: Boyle (Roscommon) chess team were drawn against an ‘in-form’ Ballinasloe (Galway) team but after a hard match,were beaten. Ballinasloe (Galway) went on to the final where they met Ballinamore (Leitrim) and overcame them as well to take first place. U16: Ballaghaderreen (Roscommon) were beaten when they came up against Ballinasloe (Galway) who were also on form, as with their U12 team. Ballinasloe (Galway) met DWT (Sligo) in the final and became all-out winners. Draughts U10: Ballinameen/Breedogue (Roscommon) U10 team put up a good fight against NBT(Galway) but couldn’t quite manage to win. NBT(Galway) went on to the final but came up against a good Maugheraboy (Sligo) team who beat them to take gold. U-12: The second team to come from Ballinameen/Breedogue (Roscommon) also had a tough match when they met DWT(Sligo) in the semi-finals. They were unable to pull off a win against an ‘on form’ DWT (Sligo) team who went on to meet Galway in the final and take gold medals. U14: Castlerea took on another ‘in-form’ team from NBT (Galway) in the semi-finals and beat them, taking them into the final to play against DWT (Sligo). Castlerea fought hard against the Sligo team and the match was drawn. This meant that a play-off had to take place and unfortunately the Castlerea team lost 3-2 but can certainly hold their heads up high as they were beaten by a very good Sligo team. Handball Boys U13: There was no Roscommon team in this age group so the contest was for teams from Galway, Mayo and Sligo. Moycullen (Galway) were gold medal winners after some very good games. Boys U15 Roscommon/Kilteeven (Roscommon) were drawn against Castleconnor (Sligo) in this semi final and played very well to take the games and go on to the final where they met Moycullen (Galway). Fighting hard in the final meant that Roscommon came through as gold medallists. Girls U13: Roscommon/Kilteevan (Roscommon) girls were also drawn against Castleconnor (Sligo) in their semi-final and played an excellent game to beat the Sligo side. This win took them to a final against Moycullen (Galway) where they once again played an excellent game but could not pull off a win. Moycullen took the game and the gold medals. Girls U15 Final The Roscommon/Kilteevan girls team played in a straight final against Knock (Mayo) as these were the only two teams to register. It was an exciting match with the Roscommon girls winning and taking the gold medals. Indoor Soccer Boys U13: Strokestown (Roscommon) played against and beat Kilmaine (Mayo) in the semi-final which put them against St. Feichins (Sligo) in the final. After a thrilling game Strokestown were beaten 3-5 by St. Feichins. Boys U15: Strokestown (Roscommon) were drawn against Cong (Mayo) in the semi-final and beat them. This put the Strokestown team into the final against St. Feichins where both teams played a very competitive game. Strokestown came through as winners with a score of 6-4 to take the gold medals. Girls U13 The AFK (Roscommon) team beat Curry (Sligo) in the semi-finals to take their place in the final against Manorhamilton (Leitrim). The girls played an excellent game to beat Manorhamilton 3-0 to take the gold medals. Girls U15: The U15 girls team from Strokestown (Roscommon) played against NBT (Galway) in the semi-final and beat them. This put the team into the final against Bohola (Mayo) where they beat them 2-1 to take first place and the medals. Table Tennis Boys U13 The boys U13 team from Ballinameen/Breedogue got a bye into the final where they met Maugheraboy (Sligo). Sligo took the gold medals with a win over the Roscommon boys. Girls U13 Final: The girls from AFK (Roscommon) played in a straight final against Drumcliff (Sligo) which turned out to be a very hard fought match. It was a draw after the singles games so the doubles game had to be played. The AFK girls held on to take the game 4-3 and also the gold medals. Boys U16: The boys from Ballintubber/Ballymoe played against Cong (Mayo) in a good match but lost out by two games. Cong went on to the final but lost against Sligo. Girls U16 Final: The girls from Ballinameen/Breedogue played in a straight final against Carracastle (Mayo) where they came out on top winning 4-0 to take the gold medals. Castlerea Basketball Tournament: The Basketball tournament started on March 24th at the Castlerea Community Centre with teams from around the county taking part. The boys U13 quarter-finals started with Ballaghaderreen beating Aughrim/Kilmore to set them up into a semi final against Kiltoom/Cam who came out winners in their match against Ardcarne. Boyle and Castlerea both had walkovers into the semis and were drawn against each other. With each team competing well in the semi-finals, the Castlerea team came out winners beating Boyle and Ballaghaderreen beat Kiltoom/Cam to set up a final on 19th or 20 April. The date will be confirmed. Basketball reminder: The boys U16 tournament now on Saturday 12th April and the Girls U16 now on Sunday 13th April.
