Commercial regeneration continues in Ballygar

Developments continue in the town of Ballygar which has been the subject of much regeneration in recent years. A boom in terms of housing in the town has seen increased confidence in the commercial life of the town and new supermarkets and restaurants have appeared during 2007. The redevelopment of Tierney’s to a state-of-the-art bar and dining facility has proved popular and the restaurant in Tierney’s now provides a focal point for local family events and functions, offering a new facility in terms of dining out in the locality. Fast food restaurants have also opened in the town in recent months, including Morelli’s moving into the town, while an Indian takeaway has been in operation in Ballygar for many months. A major new supermarket was opened by the Holmes family during the summer months, while many other local shops were upgraded during the year. Nuala Shaughnessy also opened a new business in the town this year, Para Ti. Para Ti, a new spa therapy suite, opened its doors on August 25th. That same month the social highlight of the year in Ballygar took place, Ballygar carnival. This year’s carnival drew huge crowds to the town, and musical highlights included the Dublin City Ramblers, Clare Celts and The Conquerors. There were great celebrations in Ballygar this week as 150 years of the local church were marked with a special mass celebrated by Bishop of Elphin Christopher Jones, followed by a social event in the local community centre. Aonad Resource Centre continues to be the centre of community life in the town, offering a range of courses, training, and help in the form of counselling, translation services and money advice. It is also the meeting place for a local parent and toddler group. Local businesses in the Ballygar area this week issued a special thank you to their customers for their support in 2007 and look forward to continued support next year.
