MICHAEL GLAVEYS All club activities were postponed last week due to the untimely death of Martin Glennon (R.I.P). Martin was a great supporter of the Club and his son Andrew and son-in-law Stephen Ronane represent our club at U-16 and Senior level respectively. Martin had a great interest in all sport especially Galway hurling and football and horse racing. Martin will be sadly missed by all who knew him. BOYLE The McGovern Directional Drilling team is expected to play their last game in the first phase of the Tansey Cup versus Oran on the weekend of 14th/15th June. The second phase of this competition will commence shortly afterwards. The Feelystone junior team is expected to be in action also that weekend with an away game against neighbours Ballinameen. The intermediate championship first round game versus Kilbride is expected to be played on the weekend of 5th/6th July. The U-14 team’s league game versus Clan Na Gael was postponed as mark of respect to the Sweeney family, Kiltycreighton on the death of Mary Sweeney’s mother. The Club extends its sympathy to the Sweeney and Higgins family on their bereavement. This game is expected to be played in Abbey Park on either Saturday evening at 5pm or on Sunday at 2pm (see fixtures). Meanwhile, the U-12’s will have their first championship outing versus Clan Na Gael in the Abbey Park on Sunday at 12.30pm.The Club wishes to thank the evergreen Michael Higgins for refereeing an U-12 game at very short notice at the weekend. If Boyle intermediate team were required to play a game next weekend the most suitable venue would be Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney as they will be attending the wedding of one of its greatest servants – Stephen Tonra. All team managers are reminded that the main pitch at Abbey Park is not to be used for training under any circumstances as the training ground at the lower end of the pitch and the Warren pitch are both available. Users of the Warren pitch are advised to take note of the car parking arrangements. There will be an important meeting of the minor club on Wednesday 4th June at 9.30pm in the Royal Hotel. The management of all underage teams are asked to attend or send representatives. CASTLEREA ST KEVIN’S Our Gilmartin’s Cash and Carry sponsored senior team advanced in the O’Rourke Cup with a good win over Roscommon Gaels on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-8. Victory was achieved despite being reduced to 14 men before the game ended. The Tansey Cup game against Padraig Pearses scheduled for 25th May was called off. Congratulations to our U-14 players and mentors on a good win over St. Dominic’s on Thursday and a hard-earned away draw with Oran on Sunday when they scored 4-11 to Oran’s 3-14. Defibrillator: Training in the use of the Club’s defibrillator is being arranged. CREGGS Creggs played Clan Na Gael in both the Division 4 League and the O’Gara Cup over the weekend. Division 4 Creggs 1-12, Clan Na Gael 1-10. Creggs maintained their recent good form with a hard fought victory over Clan Na Gael on Friday evening’s game played at Creggs. The outcome was in doubt right up to four minutes from time when Ken Hegarty cut through the Clan defence for a fine goal, to put his team five points clear. Keith O Neill grabbed a late goal for Clan, but Creggs deservedly held on for an excellent win in a tight contest. O’Gara Cup: Creggs 2-6 Clan Na Gael 3-10. Clans superior finishing power proved decisive in Sunday’s O’Gara Cup encounter. Creggs battled hard throughout the game but Clan hit top gear for a ten-minute spell after half time with two well-taken goals to open up a comfortable lead. Creggs responded with two goals from full forward Dara Connelly but Clan struck for a third goal just when momentum was building for a comeback by the home side. Eugene Hanley played very well at fullback for Creggs and Evan in his duel with county man Dunning. Padraig McKeague, Michael Roarke, Ja Hughes, Dan Keane, Dara Connelly were others to impress for Creggs for this game, while James Mc Keague did well at half forward. Creggs have a vital home game in the O’Gara next Saturday against St. Ronan’s at 7.30pm EIRE OG The club was saddened to learn of the death last Thursday morning, of our President Patsy Larkin, Loughglynn. A Galway native, Patsy was a founder member of the club and was President for a number of years. He was laid to rest on Saturday morning. The U-14 boys recorded a smash-and-grab win over St. Barry’s in the Division Two League at the pitch last week. A goal in the last seconds from James Finan handed our boys a slim 1-8 to 1-7 victory. Well done to the Eire Og club players that were part of the Castlerea Community School boys’ side that captured the Connacht Colleges Senior ‘C’ title. They overcame the challenge of Manorhamilton by 0-12 to 0-08 at Carrick-on-Shannon last week. KILMORE The Kalzen sponsored senior team defeated Kilbride in the O’Rourke cup on Friday evening last by 1-14 to 2-10. Despite trailing by 7 points in the second half the team never dropped their heads and fought back well to deservedly win the game. The senior team are due to play Strokestown this Saturday in Strokestown at 8pm. The junior game fixed for Sunday against St Joseph’s was called off. ORAN The Donamon Tarmacadam Junior B’s played a well-contested challenge against Clonbeirne on Saturday last in Clonbeirne winning by one point. The U-14 team drew with Castlerea in the league on Sunday last in a very enjoyable game in Rockfield. Oran trailed by seven points with six minutes left and playing against a stiff breeze went one point ahead in injury time with Castlerea levelling in the last minute. ROSCOMMON GAELS Our 12-hour football, Hurling and Camogie marathon took place at Hyde Park last Saturday. The day started with the girls’ U-14 football and Camogie and finished with the senior hurlers. Everybody who took part received a small momento and refreshments were also provided throughout the day. The event concluded with a club night in the Hyde Centre. The organising group would like to thank all who took part and made the day a great success. Most sponsorship cards have been returned, outstanding cards should be returned immediately to your team management. Thanks to everybody who helped in the kitchen during the day and on Saturday night as everybody was well catered for on the day. U-10 Football – The club hosted a round of the Clonguish U-10 blitz on Saturday last. Eight teams participated and all enjoyed the day. It is advisable that all players should invest in their own hurley and helmet and these can be purchased at cost price from the club. No previous hurling experience is required just enthusiasm. Any parent willing to give a hand coaching this age group would be most welcome. There are inter club blitz’s planned for these age groups in the coming weeks. ST CROAN’S On Sunday last the intermediate team travelled to Ballyfarnon to play home side St Ronan’s in the O’Gara Cup. The first half was a low scoring affair neither side showing much conviction in front of goal. Croans lead by one point at the interval, 1-3 to 1-2. In the second half Croans made better use of their chances and after a dogged second half they were winners on a 3-8 to 2-7 margin. In the last week the junior team suffered two defeats. On Friday week last a below par performance in comparison to the game against Fuerty, saw a much superior Ballinameen side come out winners. While on Friday evening the opposition was St. Aidan’s in Enfield but despite the side’s best efforts they were 3-point sin arrears at the final whistle. The U-14 team defeated St Barry’s in the league on Thursday evening last. An improved performance gave St Croan’s a win by three points. In their previous league outing, the side were beaten by St Ciaran’s. Mike Keane sustained an injury in that game and the cub wishes him a speedy recovery. The U-10 team had their first official outing last week, when they were involved in a very successful blitz with Kilbride. Finally, the club is holding a coaching camp for children aged from U-8 and U-14 on Saturday next the 31st of May in Enfield. The U-8 and U-10 session will be from 9.30 to 1.00 and from U-12 and U-14 will be from 2.00-5.00. For any further information please contact Coaching Coordinator Seán Tarmey. ST DOMNIC’S St Dominic’s opened their Championship Campaign on Sunday last in Woodmount with a hard earned draw against Roscommon Gaels. Dominic’s will improve from this performance and will feel confident entering next week’s game against Tremane. The defence looks solid with Damian Fallon outstanding but the balance of youth and experience will be the key in the forward line. (See Match Report). St Dominic’s are currently finalising details for our Parish League on Sunday 8th June the winners of which will be presented with the Alan Gately Memorial Cup. A Meeting of the Football Club will take place on Tuesday 10th June at 9pm in the Meeting Room. Our U-14 footballers played Castlerea on Thursday last in the League and went down to a physically stronger side, which was a major factor in the difficult weather conditions. Dominic’s were short a few regulars and this also had a telling effect but they still have a reasonable chance of reaching a League Semi-Final. Dominic’s will field two U-12 teams this year in the League as we have 35 players in this age Group, which is great credit to the trainers. We play Castlerea in Division 1 in Castlerea at 12.30 on Sunday and we also play Roscommon Gaels on Sunday in Division 3 in the Hyde. U-8 Football: Dominic’s played Roscommon Gaels in a blitz on Sunday evening last in Hyde Park. This was a very enjoyable evening for all the Players and indeed the large number of Parents who attended. Both Clubs had two Teams and we would like to thank Roscommon Gaels for hosting the Blitz and also for the treats to the Children afterwards. Hurling and Camogie: Tulsk U-10 Camogie team made history on Saturday last by taking part in a fun Blitz that was organised by the County Camogie board, the girls played a total of 4 games and their attitude and determination were a joy to watch. WESTERN GAELS Our senior team had a comfortable win over Carrick in the Leo Kenny Cup. Our O’ Rourke Cup game was called off against St. Faithleachs due to the sudden death of Ita Dooney (R.I.P). She is an aunt to Faithleachs player Aidan Dooney. The club extends its deepest sympathy to her family and also the Keaveney and Casserly families. We are looking forward to our dinner dance next Sunday night 1st June in the Abbeyfield Hotel, Ballaghaderreen. Paul Earley will be the special guest. He will present the medals to the victorious O’Gara Cup winners. Music is by John Dolan and Off The Cuff. Tickets are €50 and can be got from any club officer as time is running out and it would be advisable to get the tickets as soon as possible as we need to know the numbers for the hotel. MINOR KILBRIDE U-10’s: Our U-10 squad played host to two St Croan’s team last week. A cold blustery evening, but the wee stalwarts on the pitch didn’t feel a thing and all played with heart and determination and a great evening was had by all. U-12’s: Our U-12 squad also had a challenge match last week, taking on Strokestown at home. A thrilling encounter ensued and a narrow win for the home side was a fair result. U-14’s: Our U-14 team continue their league campaign, having travelled to St Aidan’s. A tightly knit team of lads, who remain unbeaten. Next match against St. Barry’s. Training as usual, unless otherwise specified. HURLING ATHLEAGUE/TREMANE There will be a Table Quiz in Waldron’s, Athleague this Friday night at 9.30pm to raise funds for Athleague/Tremane U-14 Hurling team who are going to Feile in June. Your support would be gratefully appreciated. BALLYGAR Our Junior C team played their second championship game on Sunday afternoon in Athenry against Liam Mellows but came away with a three-point loss of 2-07 to 2-10. With a lot of absentees on the Ballygar team due to various reasons they knew that this game was going to be a tight affair. This was a game that could have easily gone in our lads favour. They had plenty of chances up front and gave away some easy scores also. Overall this was a reasonable performance by our lads. Unfortunately not all fifteen lads got going in this game. The club are holding their annual Race night on Saturday the 21st of June. All club players, members and supporters are urged to support this event once again. Club officials and senior players will be selling horses in the weeks leading up to the event. The club would like to pay a special thank you to both Larry Gordon and Christy Finneran for their generous sponsorship of hoodies for the U-14 and U-16 teams respectively, they were very much appreciated. LADIES STROKESTOWN The Junior League Final is due to take place this weekend (final date yet to be confirmed), with our Strokestown Ladies playing Shannon Gaels. Best of luck to the girls! Our U-14’s lost the championship semi-final on Monday evening by a single point to St Ciaran’s. Scoreline 0-8 to 0-7. We had all the play in second half but just could not score due to great marking by Ciaran’s defence. The girls gave 100% as they did all season. Thank you to all the girls for their efforts. CAMOGIE ATHLEAGUE The Club hosted the first of the U-10 blitz’s being organised by the County Board on Saturday last. Five Clubs participated in the event and the players really enjoyed the event. The Club would like to congratulate the following from the parish on their success during the past week: St Ciaran’s U-14 footballers on winning Division 2 of the Girls Football Championship on Monday evening last against Kilglass. Fourteen players on the starting 15 were all members of the Clubs U-14 Camogie team, which also won the camogie final. AFK Under 13 Girls Soccer team on their national success at the Community Games finals in Mosney at the weekend. AFK table tennis team who represented the County at the Community Games finals also. The girls from Athleague and Fuerty N.S. who made their communion on Sunday last. The Club would like to wish all the girls the best of luck in the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations next week.
