All-Ireland SFC Qualifier Round 2
Clare 2-15 Roscommon 1-17
Roscommon went down to one of the most disappointing defeats in many years when a Jamie Malone point in the fourth minute of injury-time gave the Banner County a dramatic victory in Croke Park. Clare led by 1-10 to 1-8 at half-time with Diarmuid Murtagh fisting home the Roscommon goal in the sixth minute. But Roscommon were very lethargic for most of the opening half and after Sexton scrambled in a goal in the 18th minute, Clare looked the better side.
But Roscommon took over in the third quarter with a number of their subs making telling contributions. The game looked over by the 66th minute when Roscommon led by 1-17 to 1-12 but Colm Collins’ side never gave up. Eoin Cleary pointed in the 68th minute and a minute later Sexton rattled home a penalty after he was fouled himself. Sexton levelled the scores with a long rang free in the second minute of injury-time and then Malone popped up to break Roscommon hearts with a superb point from play in the last minute. Roscommon sub Andy Glennon had a late chance but it went wide of the post.
After the game Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham was non-commital about his future having been manager of the team for four years. He said that today was not the day to be making such decisions.
