This is the most eagerly-awaited race of the whole week and it was generally agreed that this would be a match between Kauto Star and Denman, both trained by Paul Nicholls. Robert Cooper: Said that Kauto Star had to be the choice as his jumping, which was a bit suspect last year, was now straightened out and he was now an even better horse. Ken Whelan: Was also a ‘Kauto’ man. He said that the two Nicholls’ horses would pull away from the rest and that Kauto had to be the choice. Tony Mullins: Said that the Gold Cup could be one of the greatest races in the history of national hunt racing. ‘If the two favourites are fit we are in for some race’ he commented. He said that Kauto Star could be ‘the best chaser since Arkle’ and that he would favour him to win narrowly. ‘Make sure you get to see this race. We may never see the likes of it again’ he concluded.  Robert Power: Bucked the trend and said he would favour Denman as he was a fantastic galloping horse. people summary: It was agreed that this would be the best race of the week and a treat for all fans of the racing game – but defending Champion Kauto Star was the majority choice to land the Gold Cup.  Note: There were favourable mentions for two other horses: Sweet Kiln in the Mares Race and Carruthers in the novice hurdle on the Friday.
