Central Bank launches special €2 coin marking 50 years of U2

The Central Bank of Ireland has launched a special €2 commemorative coin marking the 50th anniversary of U2.

The coin features Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr and was designed by Shaughn McGrath.

It was officially unveiled at the Little Museum of Dublin, with drummer Larry Mullen Jr attending the launch on behalf of the band.

U2’s origins date to September 1976, when Mullen placed a handwritten notice at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin seeking musicians to form a band.

The group that emerged would go on to become one of Ireland’s most internationally successful musical acts.

The Central Bank is issuing 150,000 coins in uncirculated coin cards.

A further 5,000 silver-proof versions are being produced for collectors.

The U2 coin has the same €2 denomination as an ordinary circulating coin, with its commemorative design appearing on the national side.
