Celebrating International Women’s Day 2018

Over 120 women from around Co. Roscommon united with Roscommon Women’s Network on March 8th and joined in the global celebration of women’s social, political and cultural achievements from the past and present and to discuss what needs to be done to achieve full gender equality.

The event, which was staged in Gleeson’s in Roscommon town, took the form of a talk show with the focus of celebrations for this year’s event being the 100th anniversary of Irish women winning the right to vote in 1918. The talk show was hosted by Christina McHugh, Editor of the Roscommon Herald.

Tara Farrell, Chairperson of RWN, welcomed the large audience to “a celebration, and a reflection of the fantastic work that is being done by women in County Roscommon”.

The audience then heard from a number of local women including Senator Maura Hopkins, Cllr. Orla Leyden, Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher, members of the Roscommon Manifesto group, local businesswomen, members of the RWN Intercultural Project, RWN Project Development worker, Maria Harris and special guest, Sharon Mannion, an actress and comedian from Castleplunkett.

Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr. Orla Leyden praised the work of Roscommon Women’s Network.

Music and dance was provided on the day by a Slovakian family band and by Castlerea Community School’s Transition Year students.
