National Heritage Week 2026 takes place from August 15th to 23rd, with a wide range of events planned across County Roscommon.
This year’s theme, ‘Heritage at Risk’, invites communities to consider aspects of our heritage that may be vulnerable or under threat, from historic buildings and archaeological sites to natural habitats, traditional skills, folklore and language.
Events across Roscommon will celebrate the richness of local heritage while highlighting the importance of protecting it for future generations. The programme includes talks, guided tours, family events and opportunities to explore nature, wildlife, buildings and archaeology.
Special themed events will also take place for Wild Child Day on August 22nd and Water Heritage Day on August 23rd. Many events are free of charge, while a number of digital projects can also be accessed from home. See the accompanying advertisement for a full listing of events in County Roscommon.
Roscommon County Council Heritage Officer Nollaig Feeney paid tribute to the contribution of local volunteers and community groups.
“The work of volunteers and community groups is invaluable in caring for and conserving our heritage.
Many of the National Heritage Week events in Co. Roscommon are organised by volunteers and community groups,” she said.
“National Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity for community groups to celebrate their achievements and showcase the work that they do.”
