Castlerea St Kevin’s capped a fantastic year for the club as they won the AIB Connacht IFC club title in Tuam Stadium, defeating Galway champions Monivea-Abbey by two points.
It was an incident-packed match and once again goals proved crucial for Dara Bruen’s side. The first score of the match was a Castlerea goal finished well by Eoghan O’Connell in the 4th minute after great work from Adam McDermott. Castlerea led by 1-3 to 0-3 at half-time.
Monivea tacked on two points on the resumption to narrow the gap to one but in the 37th minute sub Nathan Bligh kicked in long from 45 metres. The Monivea goalkeeper Denis Farragher misjudged the flight of the ball and it flew into the top corner. Monivea had the lion’s share of possession after that but the Castlerea defence was outstanding with team captain Michael Conroy the deserved man of the match.
Final score: Castlerea St Kevin’s 2-4 Monivea-Abbey 0-8.
