The county’s top livestock and farming produce will be showcased at this year’s Castlerea Agricultural Trade and Craft Show which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 6th. The event is sponsored by Cahill’s SuperValu in Castlerea and this year’s event is the 11th anniversary of the show. Once again, Castlerea Mart will provide the venue for the show and gates open at 10 am, with the official opening by Paddy Concannon, former Roscommon County Councillor, at 11.30 am. The official opening will be followed by judging in the various classes, including cattle, horses, ponies, donkeys, home produce, arts and crafts, sheep, goats and dogs. A large entry is anticipated in the Beef Superclass category and the champion in the Limousin class will receive a trophy sponsored by Castlerea Co-operative Livestock Mart, while the overall Champion horse and Reserve Horse will receive prizes sponsored by McSharry’s Pharmacy, Knock Road, Castlerea. Baking is a skill known to many in the Castlerea area and the region’s top bakers will put their work forward in the home produce section, always a popular section to visit during the local agricultural shows. Indeed, the champion in this section will take home the much-prized Finola Foods Perpetual Cup. Amateur photography is an increasingly popular pastime, given the advent of digital photography and the winner in this section will take home the Kearney’s Chemist Perpetual Cup. Hopefully, good weather will be another element of this year’s show in Castlerea, so why not make a date with Castlerea Agricultural Show on August Bank Holiday Monday.
