Castlerea Town playground re-opened yesterday (Wednesday) after being closed down for the past two weeks because of a mix-up over insurance. The local committee in Castlerea who were responsible for the establishment of the playground in 1998 had been looking for grant monies from a number of bodies in recent weeks when they found out that they had no insurance – hence the playground had to be closed. Local committee member Cllr. Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan takes up the story. ‘We were looking for grants from Arigna Leader, Roscommon Co. Council and Clar to refurbish the playground when the difficulty arose about insurance and we were taken aback by the situation when we found out. ‘Roscommon County Council do not own the facility – therefore their insurance scheme did not cover the Castlerea playground. ‘Interestingly the same situation applies out the road in Ballymoe – however they are insured all the time because Galway Co. Council are operating under a different insurance scheme’ he said. ‘ However after a lot of investigations and hard work by a number of people we have got ourselves sorted out with insurance through the Commuinity Forum and we were delighted to be able to re open the playground’ he said ‘ We have a year now to sort it out and the ideal situation would be that Roscommon Co Council take over the running of the playground altogether, after all that is the situation that applies in Roscommon Town Ballaghadereen and Boyle’he concluded. Cllr Flanagan says that he will be rasing the matter at the next meeting of Roscommon Co Council.
