Castlerea celebrates All-Ireland basketball triumph

There were huge celebrations in Castlerea on Monday night last as the successful Castlerea Community School Cadette Girls team returned in triumph after their sensational 50 to 48 points win against Castletroy Community School of Limerick in a high-quality All-Ireland final played on Monday afternoon at the National Basketball Arena.   Speaking to the Roscommon People on Tuesday, Castlerea coach Joe Henry said that this was one of the greatest wins by the school in any final. ‘It was a fantastic win and a great game. There was a brilliant atmosphere and the outcome was in doubt all the way through but to come out on top was just fantastic. We brought six buses to the final and our supporters were brilliant’ he said.    The final in Tallaght was illuminated by the sensational performance of Jennifer Higgins. Sister of Roscommon minor and U-21 football star Kevin Higgins, the young Fairymount girl scored an almost unprecedented 41 points out of the 50 that Castlerea scored. It was an awesome performance.   ‘Jennifer had a great game surely but this is a team game and everyone played their part’ concluded Joe.   Castlerea led by 16 to 10 after the first quarter and by 29 points to 20 at half-time, however it was 35 points each after the third quarter. Castletroy led by five points at one stage in the final quarter but Castlerea finished the stronger to record a two-point win.
