Castlecoote-Fuerty tuning up for Fleadh

The official launch of Fleadh Cheoil Ros Comáin took place last Friday night at the Castlecoote Lodge with local musicians opening and closing proceedings.

The County Fleadh, under the auspices of Athleague branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, will take place for the second year in a row in Castlecoote-Fuerty over Easter Sunday (April 1st) and Easter Monday (April 2nd).

Dr. Labhras Ó Murchú, Director General of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí, was the guest of honour at last Friday’s event which was also attended by Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy, Senator Terry Leyden and Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher, Cllr. John Keogh and Cllr. Paddy Kilduff. Also present was CEO of Roscommon County Council, Mr. Eugene Cummins.

Senator Terry Leyden, PRO of the Fleadh Cheoil committee and PJ Naughton, chairperson, warmly welcomed members of the public and assembled guests to last Friday’s launch before fellow committee members looked forward to another weekend of wonderful music and song.

Officially launching this year’s Fleadh, Dr Ó Murchú said Comhaltas had come a long way since it was established in 1951 and that there were now committees established all over the world.

Describing the thousands of Irish people who emigrated at that time as “givers rather than takers”, Dr. Ó Murchú added that “this was the spirit of Comhaltas”.

Performances at this year’s Fleadh Cheoil Ros Comáin will take place at venues across Castlecoote-Fuerty including: Dalton’s, PJ’s, Castlecoote Lodge and St. Ciaran’s Hall, which will play host to a number of free workshops from 2 pm on Easter Monday.

Full coverage of upcoming Fleadh will appear in next week’s Roscommon People.
