Car boot sale a success

Despite the dismal wind and rain, the first car boot sale held last Saturday in the Roscommon Mart was, according to organiser, Bob Whitfield, an impressive success.  He said the money raised came very close to the estimated target and future sales are now being planned. The boot sale was in aid of projects planned at the Roscommon Support Group, Derrane, Roscommon, to help people with mixed abilities to become involved in horticulture, arts and crafts and other activities. Margaret Burke, Manager of the support group, was surprised with the number of people who attended the sale. She paid tribute to Bob and the staff at Derrane for their effort in organising the event. Roscommon Mayor, John Kelly, who officially opened the sale was equally impressed with the turnout, considering the inclement weather. "I have attended a few car boot sales in my time and I can say this compares with the best. It’s a good opening shot for future sales of this kind here in Roscommon." Bob Whitfield said that the reaction of stallholders was very positive and they wanted to know when the next sale will be held. "One man told me he was ‘over the moon’ because he ‘made his money’ within an hour after the sale opened. I want to thank the management of Roscommon Mart for the free use of their facilities and I also want to thank the local newspapers for the coverage they gave us. Hopefully we will be able to announce the date of our next sale within a few weeks.’
