Galway hurling star Joe Canning and members of the Roscommon team who won the Nicky Rackard Cup were in Ballygar on Friday evening last to perform the official opening of Xpress Fitness in Ballygar. A large number of local people attended the event, which saw Sinead Gannon take over the lease of the popular gym premises which she managed since its official opening two years ago. Master of Ceremonies for the event was Michael Flanagan, Chairperson of the company which operates the community centre. Xpress Fitness is located upstairs at the Mattie McDonagh Community Centre, at the rear of the Square in Ballygar. He welcomed guests to the launch and praised the facilities available at the community centre and in particular in the gym at Xpress Fitness. He congratulated Sinead Gannon and her husband Francis Carr on their new business venture. Mr. Flanagan also had a special welcome for Joe Canning of Galway hurling fame and Micheál Keaveny and members of the Roscommon Nicky Rackard Cup winning team. Speaking of Joe Canning he said that barring accidents, he is going to have a tremendous career. Fr. Michael Breslin, PP, Ballygar performed the blessing of the new premises and noted that healthiness is very close to holiness, quoting the adage mens sans in corpore sano – (a healthy mind in a healthy body). He wished Sinead and Francis and their staff the very best for the future. Galway and Portumna hurling star Joe Canning wished Sinead all the best in her new venture and spoke of the importance of gym work for local clubs, saying that the local clubs in the Ballygar area have a wonderful facility in Xpress Fitness. Concluding he congratulated the Roscommon hurling players and said he looked forward to meeting them in a few years’ time! Sinead and Francis this week thanked both their families for their support in the run-up to the official opening and also thanked all the staff and board members at Ballygar Community Centre.
