Calls for compensation for farmers affected by Lough Funshinagh flooding

Roscommon County Council has backed a call for compensation for farmers whose land has been affected by flooding at Lough Funshinagh.

A motion brought by Cllr Tony Ward at Monday’s council meeting sought Government support for farmers who have lost the use of land since 2015. Cllr Ward said some had also lost agricultural payments while their land remained underwater.

Members heard that flooding had damaged fencing and caused erosion on some holdings. Several councillors said funding would be needed to restore land and boundaries once water levels permit the work.

The motion was agreed by the council. During the discussion, members also backed a separate proposal from Cllr Laurence Fallon for Roscommon County Council and the Office of Public Works to assess possible measures for nearby Lough Cup.

A council official said the Lough Cup assessment would be separate from the proposed long-term Lough Funshinagh scheme. Work on preparing a planning application for the Funshinagh proposal would continue, with the council hoping to bring it forward early next year.
