Renewed pressure for action at ‘dangerous’ Oran junction

Cllr Marty McDermott has called for a right-turn slip lane, additional luminous signage and improved road markings at a junction on the N60 at Oran amid continuing concerns over road safety.

The Cathaoirleach of the Roscommon Municipal District said he was “very disappointed” with the latest response from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the matter, which was considered at Monday morning’s Municipal District meeting.

Cllr McDermott said this was now the third occasion on which he had requested Roscommon County Council to write to TII regarding safety concerns at the junction.

Cllr Marty McDermott has called for a right-turn slip lane, additional luminous signage and improved road markings at a junction on the N60 at Oran amid continuing concerns over road safety.

He said the junction is located on a steep incline, which he believes further increases the danger for motorists approaching or turning at the location.

“As Chairperson of the Roscommon Municipal District, I was very disappointed with the response from Transport Infrastructure Ireland at this morning’s meeting in relation to a very dangerous junction on the N60 at Oran,” Cllr McDermott said.

“This is the third letter I have requested to be sent from Roscommon County Council to TII and again it is a very unsatisfactory response.”

TII told the Council that it would not meet councillors specifically in relation to the junction and stated that the current road signage at the location complies with the relevant regulations.

The junction forms part of the N60 at Oran, where the €14 million Oran Road Realignment Project was completed in 2020.

Cllr McDermott thanked Roscommon County Council for its assistance in raising what he described as a “very serious issue”.

He said he would continue raising the issue until additional measures are introduced at the junction.
