Busy weekend ahead

St. Comans star Marianna Rushe won a tough minor singles final in the Connacht Championships last weekend when she beat Pauline Gallagher of Mayo 21-14, 21-14 at Williamstown. Marianna now plays Wexford left-hander Niamh Murphy on Saturday in the All-Ireland semi-final and the winner of that match will play Sharon Twomey of Kerry in the final on the 13th of October.   There was also joy for the local players in the Diamond A singles final, also played at Williamstown, when Noel Raftery of Lisacul beat John Kenny of Mayo by 21-8, 21-10 in the final. Tonight (Thursday) he will face Paddy Reilly of Kilkenny at Clogh at 7.30 pm.    Also on that bill tonight in the Masters A singles Anthony O’Donnell of Lisacul faces the might of Michael ‘Duxie’ Walsh of Kilkenny.   The Connacht juvenile finals were held at Williamstown at the weekend. In the U-14 singles Martin Mulrennan of Galway beat Mark Nally of St. Comans in two straight games. It was a very impressive performance from the Comans player who was unlucky to lose the second game 21-19.   In the U 15 doubles the favourites Darren Beatty and Cian Connolly did not disappoint winning in two straight games against Mayo. The talented pair play a Leinster pairing in the All-Ireland semi-final this weekend.   Lauren O’Riordan of St. Comans  beat Pamela Conroy of Mayo in the U15 girls singles final in two straight games   In the Girls U 17 singles Laura Mannion of St. Comans was just pipped for the title by Marie Corrigan of Ballaghaderreen.    There are three semi-finals at St. Comans this Saturday, starting at 5 pm. Junior Doubles: Ollie Conway and Alan Tierney (Galway) v Pat O’Donnell and Michael Lennon (Wicklow). Chris Doolin and Niall Gordon (Roscommon ) v Michael and Jim Berry (Wexford). Ladies Junior singles: Hilary Rushe (Roscommon) v Ann Boland (Wexford). Connacht Juvenile results: U 16 Singles; S.  Cooney (Ballaghaderreen) beat Galway. U15 singles: F. Curran (Galway) beat Mayo. Girls U 17 doubles: Linda Connolly/Siobhan Tully (Roscommon) are through to the All-Ireland semi-final this weekend. Connacht Junior doubles final: Lorcan Maughan and Seamus Connolly (Ballymoe) lost to Ollie Conway and Alan Tierney in two straight games.    Junior B singles final: Steve Joyce of Ballymoe beat Shane Heraty of Mayo in the final. He will play at a Connacht venue in the semi-final this Saturday. Congratulations to Glinsk handball club. They have a new 40 x 20 court at Ballincurry with all facilities and to Michael Hurley and his committee who have done a great job there.
