‘Buccs’ provide some joy after Irish World Cup woes!

BUCCANEERS   33   CONNEMARA   3 The Republic of Ireland are surely out of the Euro soccer, Cork are  humbled again by Kerry (Connemara’s Aidan O’Halloran will have better memories of this occasion) and Ireland scrambling to stave off Georgia last week; thankfully Buccaneers provided this scribe with some succour in a 33-3 Connacht Senior League victory over Connemara at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday. The win secured the return of the League title to the midlanders, yet it was far from vintage fare by Buccs in near ideal conditions.   Buccaneers, utilising a trimmed squad this term, were again forced to realign their forces due to injuries sustained by Brendan Guilfoyle, Garreth Halligan and Paul Harte, the highly promising young winger sustaining a broken bone in his leg that will rule him out until the AIB League kicks off. It gave Buccs the opportunity to look at some different options but it was a somewhat disjointed display by the players on duty. The homesters were undoubtedly the better side, but the winning margin flattered them with most of their tries coming from deep where Sean Carey was in imperious form, his pace and running ability wreaking havoc when he was in possession. The Ballinasloe youngster stole the show with no less than four tries. Simon Rolleston continues to settle into the key outhalf role and he contributed the remainder of Buccaneers points, converting four tries, the fifth which he touched down himself.BUCCANEERS:-  N.O’Hara; J.Geraghty, P.Moloney, A.Hayman, S.Carey; S.Rolleston, M.Bruce; B.Gilligan, M.Madden, M.Diffley; Anthony Hughes, J.Wilson; A.Hanley (captain), S.Burke and M. TePou. Replacements used:- D.Griffith (for Bruce, 45 mins), Adrian Hughes (for Hanley, 51 mins), T.Gilligan (for Moloney, 53 mins), E.Brady (for B.Gilligan, 62 mins) and G.Kelly (for TePou, 65 mins). BUCCANEERS   31   NEWBRIDGE   21 Bucaneers  U-20’s won a friendly encounter at home to Newbridge on Saturday, prevailing in a see-sawing match on a 31-21 margin. This was typical early season fare as both clubs endeavour to get into their rhythm for the campaigns ahead. Buccs were that bit more clued in and came out on top 5-3 in the tries count. BUCCANEERS:-  D.Costello; N.Cunniffe, J.O’Connell, T.Hynes, L.Connor; S.Moorehead, K.Creavin; A.Daly, R.Walshe, S.Stapleton; K.Kennedy, B.McManus; D.Reynolds, P.Galvin and H.Reilly. Replacements used:- T.Couper and R.Grenham. THIS WEEKEND: Buccaneers face a tricky assignment as they bid to retain their Connacht Senior Cup crown when they travel to Clounacauneen in Galway on Saturday when Corinthians will undoubtedly be fired up to go one better than in the recent draw between these two clubs at the same Corinthian Park venue.   For the second time in three seasons, the U-20 Interprovincial Championship play-offs take place at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday afternoon. The stars of the future from Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster will battle it out for rankings when Connacht face Munster at 2 p.m. while Leinster and Ulster square up for ultimate honours at 4 p.m. Alan Gaughan and Billy Henshaw are among the Pirates in the Connacht squad. CONGRATS: Congratulations to Connacht U-18’s on their great success at the weekend defeating Munster 20-0 in a Youths interpro. Mark Dolan, Adam Kennedy and Trevor Thompson are a trio of Buccs in the side. Dolan notched a try and Kennedy landed a penalty and conversion.  It’s crunch time  in the Rugby World Cup for Ireland this Friday when they square up to hosts France in a must-win Pool D match. Ireland have struggled to impose themselves in their opening two games, yet have a brace of victories to their credit.  SYMPATHY: Deepest sympathy is extended to Neil Dooley and family on the recent death of his mother and to the families of Thomas Kelly and Kevin Irwin who both died recently. CONGRATS: Congrats to Clem Higginbotham and Patrick Harkins and their respective spouses on their recent marriages.  REGISTRATION: Registration of Mini players takes place in the club on this Thursday evening, September 20 th , from 7 p.m. Each player must bring a copy of his/her Birth Certificate and should be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Registration of Youths players is scheduled for Friday, October 5 th , when the same guidelines apply.
