Brilliant victory by Essex

Co. Roscommon owned horse Essex returned to the track in devastating style on Monday at Fairyhouse when the Michael O’ Brien trained seven-year-old star won the Sherry Fitzgerald Hurdle beating a top class field to land the €22,500 first prize.      Essex is owned by the BPS syndicate in South Roscommon and many of the syndicate members are former Clan na nGael GAA club, players and members.    Essex was appearing on a racecourse for the first time since last May and  he has been a huge money-spinner for his owners over the years, winning an Irish Cesareawitch, The Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury and several other top class races. Trainer Michael O’Brien says that he will now target the Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown for the horse.    ‘He tackled two and a half miles on Monday and we will be targetting the three mile event at The Festival now’ O’Brien said after Monday’s race. The horse was ridden by Andrew Lynch and was returned at 7/2.
