St Brigid’s produced one of the best performances seen by a Roscommon club in many years when they swept the hot favourites and Galway champions Corofin aside to claim the AIB Connacht Club SFC title at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday.
Brigid’s dominated from the throw-in and with man of the match Ben O’Carroll on fire up front they built up a handsome lead. After two O’Carroll points, the Roscommon attacker blasted home a 13th minute penalty after Alan Daly was fouled.
A Liam Silke fisted goal gave Corofin a lifeline at half-time and it was St Brigid’s 1-6 Corofin 1-2 at the break.
The first score of the second half was a Corofin goal from Dylan McHugh in the 38th minute which reduced the margin to one. But the Brigid’s response was magnificent, with four of the next five points from Ben O’Carroll (3) and the inspirational Brian Stack.
Late scores from Bobby Nugent, Ruaidhri Fallon and Ciaran Sugrue saw Jerome Stack’s men claim the Shane McGettigan Cup in thrilling fashion.
Final score: St Brigid’s 1-13 Corofin 2-5.
