It was a big weekend for golf in Roscommon, and congratulations to Simon Walker, who won the prestigious Castletroy Scratch Cup on Saturday beating a very strong field by four shots.
The 21-year-old Roscommon town man birdied the 15th, 17th and 18th in his second round to seal the title. He posted rounds of 67 and 69 to defeat Cork’s Morgan Cain who finished in second place. The Maynooth University student put in the foundations for his win in round one when he went around in a very impressive five under 67.
There was more good news for Roscommon Golf Club on Sunday when it was announced that young ladies star Olivia Costello has received an invite to play at the Irish Women’s Open at Dromoland Castle at the end of September. The 14-year-old has been progressing through the ranks impressively again this year and now gets a chance to play alongside stars such as Leona Maguire and others.
However, there was no luck for the Roscommon Ladies’ senior team, who bowed out at the 19th hole in the All-Ireland Senior Foursomes semi-final on Saturday at Slieve Russell. With the match level at one win each, the final game went down to the 19th and Roscommon were just pipped by Malone Golf Club (Belfast). However it has been a very successful year for the club once again.
