It may be dark and dreary outside, but Athlone Little Theatre is determined to bring some much-needed fun and laughter in the run-up to Christmas.

The busy theatre troupe, based in St Mary’s Place, is preparing to present three fantastic one-act comedies, directed by Hélène Lepaon, Bealnamulla’s Clive Darling, and Paddy Martin, from November 29th to December 6th. Shows will take place at 8 pm, but as part of this run there is also a Sunday matinee taking place at 3 pm on December 3rd.

The first production is ‘Dear Diva’ by Jan Harris and directed by Hélène Lepaon, in which middle-aged Frances (Linda Butler) is ecstatically awaiting the arrival of legendary megastar of stage and screen Ezzlie Harlow (Michelle Kelly) to her humble home. Both the fan and the big star are in for shocks, betrayal, and a reversal of fortune, as they learn from each other to be careful what you wish for. Ronan McGrane completes the cast as the taxi driver.

In the second production, ‘Louie’s Daughter’ by Frederick Stroppel, which is being directed by Bealnamulla’s Clive Darling, the action centres around a typical corner bar, where regulars AG (Martin Kelleher) and Woody (Brian Foy) enjoy the male camaraderie of friendly insults, unsolicited opinions, and pointless conversation. But their comfortable everyday routine is disrupted by the unexpected presence of a pretty female bartender, Donna, played by Ekiñe Azcárate.

Finally, there is ‘Melody’ by Deirdre Kinahan, directed by Paddy Martin, which is a quirky play focusing on the peculiar passions shared by bachelor Mr Kane (Ronan Flynn) and widow Kathleen (Gráinne Moore). These two lonely souls realise they share many common interests including classical music, ham and cheese sandwiches, and much, much more.
