The Committee of Ballintubber Community Alert hosted an information day for senior citizens on Friday, November 2nd in the Old School to mark Community Alert Awareness Week. The Group was addressed by Sergeant Larry Shine, Crime Prevention Officer, Bernie Kearney of Muintir na Tíre, Ms. Gayle Murray of the Citizens Information Bureau, Brid Kneafsey, Public Health Nurse and Garda Tom Cunningham. The acting Secretary Bernadette Hoban welcomed everyone to the meeting especially the senior citizens and the guest speakers. She reminded people that Ballintubber Community Alert is in existence for 15 years and told them to contact any committee member if they wished to avail of grants for security items. Sergeant Larry Shine reminded people to contact the Gardaí if they had doubts about any activity in their area and he reminded those with alarm phones to wear their pendants. Bernie Kearney praised the group for their continued good work, stating that they are one of the best groups in the area. He distributed leaflets on Community Alert to all present. Gayle Murray also distributed leaflets on Citizens’ Rights. Public Health Nurse Brid Kneafsey told people where she can be contacted if she was required. Garda Tom Cunningham, who is with the group since it was set up, reminded people to be alert at all times and not to hesitate in calling the Gardaí if they needed them. Refreshments were served to all present. A great day was had by all. It is hoped to host further days in the future in the lovely Old School House.
