Ballinasloe students receive Gaisce awards

Four Roscommon students from Ardscoil Mhuire in Ballinasloe were among those recently presented with the President’s Award at a function in Galway. The four were among 21 from the school who attended the Gaisce awards ceremony in the Galway Bay Hotel last week and received the Bronze award. The President’s Award is the national challenge award from the President of Ireland to the young people of Ireland, aged between 15 and 25. The award aims to encourage young people to set themselves a demanding challenge and persevere with achieving the challenge. There are four elements to the programme: Community, for example, helping the elderly; Skill, e.g. learning a musical instrument; Physical, e.g. swimming and Adventure, e.g. adventure weekend. The local students who participated were Louise Egan from Taughmaconnell, Sarah Warde Kilduff from Oldtown, Athlone; Sarah Grehan from Taughmaconnell and Helen Kenny from Creagh. Sarah Warde Kilduff got involved in training primary school children in volleyball as part of her award, Louise Egan helped out at the local bingo sessions as part of her community work, Sarah Grehan learned calligraphy as a new skill and Helen Kenny got involved in training underage teams. All four also took part in an adventure weekend at Lough Allen Adventure Centre last May.
