Bishop’s consecration New Bishop of Achonry, Monsigor Brendan Kelly will take up his duties after his consecration in St. Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen on Sunday, January 27th next. Our bestwishes also to Bishop Thomas Flynn for continued health and blessings in his retirement and thanking him for his ministry over the last thirty years.  Mental health thanks The Ballaghaderreen Mental Health Association wish to thank all who collected and supported their recent church gate collections which raised €980.20 in Ballaghaderreen, €315 in Lisacul and €245 in Fairymount. Your support for this worthy cause was much appreciated.  Church gate collection The foundation wishes to thank all who supported the recently held church gate collection. The total mount realised in Brusna, Derrinacartha, Monasteraden and Ballaghaderreen was €2,200. Your support for this worthy cause was much appreciated.  Ballagh soccer club The new soccer club held a meeting in Spells, Pound Street, Ballaghaderreen on Tuesday, November 20th last. The following officers were elected for the forthcoming year: Chairman  Andy Hanley, Vice Chairman Pat Brown, Secretary Jo Connolly, Assistant Secretary Grainne Forrest, Treasurer Eleanor Doohan, Assistant Treasurer Natalie Hanley, PRO Brid Duffy, Delegates Ger Carmody and Jimmy Towey, Youth Officer Natalie Hanley. Other committee members include Paul McLoughlin, Dessie Lynch, Alex McAllister, Michael Feeney and Fiona Lowry. The clubs intends to enter underage teams in the Roscommon & District League and  looks forward to next season and seeing the children playing in the new Community Park.  Ballagh handball girls The Connacht girls handball team had a successful outing at the Interprovincial championships in Co. Tipperary recently. Well done to Ballaghaderreen’s Sarah Coleman, Stephanie Coleman, Amy Corrigan and Mary Duffy who were members of the panel.  Anyone for salsa? Bingo continues on Wednesday nights at 8.30 pm in the Royal Oak Parish Hall, Ballaghaderreen. Salsa classes are held on Tuesdays at 8 pm and Fior Céilí on Thursdays at 8 pm. All are welcome. Feted at Trinity Well done and best wishes to three past pupils of St. Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen who were awarded an entrance exhibition prize by Trinity College, Dublin. Clionadh Mulligan, Fiona Mulligan and Ann-Marie Waldron were the three students who received an award, which was made on the basis of public schools Leaving Cert examination results in 2007. The recipients received the awards at a presentation ceremony held in Trinity Hall accompanied by parents and friends.  Eurochildren Congratulations to Mariam Amjad and Patricia Viana, both pupils at St. Attracta’s National School, Ballaghaderreen, who had their contributions published in the Eurochild Anthology. The second launch of the book was performed by Mayor John Kelly in Ballaghaderreen Library.   Fire fighters Ballaghaderreen has the lowest number of fire fighters in the region despite having a high call-out rate. A motion was raised at the November meeting of Roscommon County Council to re-assess the number of fire fighters in all units in the county with a view to increasing the numbers to meet increased workloads and in keeping with the fire fighters composite agreement made in 1999.  Well done Jean Well done to Jean Towey, Ballaghaderreen who was the recent recipient of a Higher Certificate in Business Studies.   Santa helps Duffy’s raise money for Cancer Care West Duffy’s SuperValu, Ballaghaderreen were delighted to have Santa visit their store. Teresa and the girls in the shop took photographs of the children who came to tell Santa what they would like to receive on Christmas morning. If any parents wish to receive a copy of the photograph, (see a slection alongside), please call to the shop from December 20th. Donations may be made at your own discretion. To date €540 has been raised and Duffy’s hope to raise more, as all proceeds will go directly to Cancer Care West. Well done to all involved in this project!
