Ballaghaderreen car thefts condemned

A Ballaghaderreen-based county councillor and businessman who was himself a victim of crime in recent days has hit out as the spate of car thefts and acts of vandalism in that area.    The People can report that the Ballaghadereen area has been targetted by car thiefs and vandals, a development which local Cllr. Michael Mulligan (Sinn Fein) has termed as ‘worrying’.    Over the past couple of weeks two cars and a van belonging to Cllr. Mulligan were stolen on the same night.   One of the cars was abandoned after a short distance as it ran out of petrol but another of the cars was found in Dublin  while the van was recovered in Sligo.   Garda forensic teams are investigating the theft of the vehicles in question.   Meanwhile, two nights later a van was stolen from the Fairymount area. However it was recovered locally shortly afterwards.    In a separate incident tens of thousands of euro worth of damage was caused to cars and vans at Sherlock’s Garage on the Frenchpark Road, Ballaghaderreen when intruders broke into the yard and sprayed paint on the vehicles.   It is thought that this was the work of a number of underage children — nevertheless Cllr Mulligan says that it’s a worrying trend.   ‘I’d say in a lot of cases there is drugs and drink involved and in the case of underage children carrying out crime there is not a lot that anyone can do which is very frustrating’ he commented.    Gardai are investigating all the above incidents.
